چکیده

Hyperkalemia is a common, silent, and potentially lethal dinical condition. The pathophysiologic factors that bead to hyperkalemia are well understood, and the treatment is straightforward. Clinical management requires exclusion of pseudohyperkalemia, assessment of the urgency for treatment, and institution of appropriate therapy. Long-term treatment requires identification of the etiology and prevention of recurrence.

Hyperkalemia: a Potentially Lethal Clinical Condition

∑ Hyperkalemia develops when the regulation between potassium intake and potassium excretion, or the distribution between intraand extracellular potassium is disturbed. It is a common, silent, and potentially lethal clinical condition, which seldom occurs in patients with normal renal function. Clinically, the most important effect of hyperkalemia is that which the condition has on the myocardi...

Potassium Balances in Maintenance Hemodialysis

Potassium is abundant in the ICF compartment in the body and its excretion primarily depends on renal (about 90%), and to a lesser extent (about 10%) on colonic excretion. Total body potassium approximated to 50mmol/kg body weight and 2% of total body potassium is in the ECF compartment and 98% of it in the intracellular compartment.Dyskalemia is a frequent electrolyte imbalance observed among ...

Cytomegalovirus in Immunosuppressed Patients: a Silent and Potential Killer

INTRODUCTION Human Cytomegalovirus ( CMV ) is an enveloped DNA virus, a potential killer or a lifelong silent killer (1). CMV infections are common and are usually asymptomatic however clinically ignificant infections are encountered frequently in pregnant women, neonates and immunocompromised patients (2). CMV is an important cause of orbidity and mortality among immunosuppressed patients. Aft...

Guilt by association: paradigm for detecting a silent killer (thoracic aortic aneurysm)

Recent studies have confirmed a close association between various medical conditions (intracranial aneurysm, abdominal aortic aneurysm, temporal arteritis, autoimmune disorder, renal cysts), certain aortic anatomic variants (bovine aortic arch, direct origin of left vertebral artery from aortic arch, bicuspid aortic valve), and family history of aneurysm disease with thoracic aortic aneurysm an...

The Efficacy of Toll-Like Receptors in Awakening Dendritic Cell/Natural Killer Cell System for Eradication of Tumors

Natural killer (NK) cells are effector cells of the innate immune system that exert direct cytotoxic functions. Ubiquitously-expressed toll-like receptors (TLRs) have been recognized as one of the major components promoting dendritic cell (DC) maturation, which may induce polarized immune responses beneficial to cancer immunotherapy. TLR-activated NK cells and DCs are prerequisite for robust ac...
